How to Choose the Right Turf for Your Buffalo Lawn

The Buffalo Lawn is rising in popularity all across Australia because of its ability to grow fast and its resilience to damage as well as its capacity to repair itself quickly. There used to be a time when buffalo grass used to have some undesirable traits like coarse leaves but now all that has been dealt with leaving turf growers and their clients with no reason to complain.

Types of Buffalo Lawn

1.    Sapphire Buffalo:  This is an extremely child friendly grass. Its leaves are fine textures and a beautiful dark green. You will see the same colour throughout winter as it does not fade so easily. In some very cold places, it becomes dormant but still retains its colour!

2.    Sir Walter: Almost every lawn owner would have heard about this turf. It is highly suitable to the soil and climate of Australia. The colour of this grass is soft dark green. This variety too has excellent tolerance to weather conditions such as drought and you will see a consistent colour throughout the year come winter or summer. It does not require much water or even spraying for that matter as it is quite resilient to various fungi. The children love to play on this soft turf

3.    Palmetto: this is a variety that not only keeps its colour during winter season but continues to grow too. It is susceptible to drought conditions where it turns brown but has a quick recovery rate too
4.    Kikuyu: if you want to grow a lawn in the shortest possible time, then this is the choice for you. Like its other buffalo counterparts, it too is resilient and has rapid rate of recuperation. It is one of the most affordable turfs out there

5.    Couch Grasses: these are almost legendary for invading gardens. They grow well under strong sun but find it difficult under shade! Hence, in this aspect it is quite the opposite of the above mentioned types. This variety includes many sub categories such as wintergreen couch, legend couch and greenlees park couch.

Is Sapphire Buffalo the Right Choice or Something Else?

This is an Australian bred variety which has also become very popular in the US. It has been bred from the Sir Walter variety. In case you think that sapphire is your appropriate choice then it is better to know the turf’s good and bad traits:

*    It is commonly referred to as one of the most shade tolerant grass
*    It is known to produce less thatch
*    Its seeding levels are also low
*    It grows slowly which means less maintenance such as lesser mowing
*    It maintains a more or less consistent colour the whole year round

Sapphire has some unique characteristics such as its fine leaves and the blue hue. In fact, it is this shade that has given it its name!
